Community outreach tries to fill health care needs

Dana Williams drops her 4-year-old son, Josiah, off each morning at the St. Mary?s Community Center in Cuyler/Brownville where for three hours he will be immersed in a pre-school program with about nine other children ? and provide her with a brief respite at home. For Williams, the center is a lifeline of sorts. She completed her GED program there last May, the first step toward what she hopes will be further education at Savannah Technical College. St. Mary?s is part of the St. Joseph?s/Candler Community outreach commitment that Paul P. Hinchey, president/CEO, says is a $44.6 million Community-assistance injection each year. That includes more than $21 million in traditional charity care, plus $3.3 million in Community benefit operations, health profession education, subsidized health services and Community-building activities by the health care provider. An additional $20 million in uncollected service costs and uncompensated Medicare costs round out the picture. Need to be proactive The system?s board of trustees feels it is their obligation to ensure the needs are being met by proactive, not passive, means, Hinchey said. ?We?re expected to take care of these patients where people are,? he said. ?That means actually going out in the Community where people are and provide health care to underserved people.?
