Lithia Author Launches Magical Children's Book | Osprey Observer

By Kelly Legg

Lithia resident, Jodi Stone, is realizing another dream come true. Besides managing her household with her three daughters, being a wife, working full-time and recently finishing her creative writing degree at USF, she also managed to find time to write a much-anticipated children?s book.

Writing is no stranger to Stone. She has published several children?s books in the past, and what sets her apart is she also illustrates. In addition, her books were recently picked up by a new publisher, Anchor Publishing, where they have set her writing career further in motion. Stone?s stories are all inspired by her family. ?My three daughters and husband provide me the laughter, love and daily inspiration for my writing,? said Stone

Her new book, Savannah?s Story, was released in October. ?The inspiration for this book came on a day when my youngest daughter, Savannah, was sulking over her sisters not wanting to play with her. So she went to her beloved dollhouse, and started talking to it and her dolls,? said Stone. ?It was so sweet and one of those moments where a story came to life.?

This wonderful rhyming book takes the reader on a magical journey with Savannah inside her dollhouse, as she experiences unexpected surprises along the way including floating on a cloud of bubbles. During her adventures, Savannah realizes the true meaning of friendship and family. This book is geared towards children ages 4-8 and is available in bookstores and on Amazon.com.

With her imagination in full-gear, Stone is already working on her next book with an Easter-theme which will be on schedule for publishing in the spring. Some of her past books include Princess Stories and A Christmas Princess.

Stone is planning on an upcoming book signing at Barnes and Noble in Brandon. If your school, library or group would like for her to speak, share more about her books and illustrations, or sign copies, contact Stone at stone3snuggles@netzero.net. To purchase a copy of any of her books, visit www.amazon.com or visit any local bookstore.

'Grassroots' neurons wire and fire together for dominance in the brain

ScienceDaily (Oct. 24, 2012) ? Inside the brain, an unpredictable race -- like a political campaign -- is being run. Multiple candidates, each with a network of supporters, have organized themselves into various left- and right-wing clusters -- like grassroots political teams working feverishly to reinforce a vision that bands them together. While scientists know that neurons in the brain anatomically organize themselves into these network camps, or clusters, the implications of such groupings on neural dynamics have remained unclear until now.

Using mathematical modeling, two researchers from the University of Pittsburgh have found that neurons team up together to sway particular outcomes in the brain and take over the nervous system in the name of their preferred action or behavior. The findings will be published in the November print issue of Nature Neuroscience.

"Through complex mathematical equations, we organized neurons into clustered networks and immediately saw that our model produced a rich dynamic wherein neurons in the same groups were active together," said Brent Doiron, assistant professor of mathematics.

Together with Ashok Litwin-Kumar, a PhD student in neural computation in Pitt and Carnegie Mellon's Center for the Neural Basis of Cognition, Doiron found that, like a political race, the brain's neurons divide into a collection of candidates (clusters) with various preferences, each with its own network of supporters (neurons) interacting on a competitive playing field (the cortex). The Pitt researchers' mathematical models show that few neural teams can be highly active and "in the lead" at any given time, advocating for their stimulus or response preference and suppressing the preferences of the other teams.

However, when Doiron and Litwin-Kumar introduced a stimulus to select only a few groups in the network, the competition quickly became unbalanced. Similar to selective funding during a campaign, the parties with "more campaign money" (neurons influenced by their preferred stimulus) had a higher probability of "winning the race" (or taking over the nervous system).

"We found that stimulation actually reduces the firing rate variability among neurons, an observation that is consistent with recent cortical readings," said Doiron. "Our results show that even weak stimuli can substantially change our balanced network dynamics, making brain dynamics much more predictable."

When there was no stimulus, Doiron and Litwin-Kumar saw that the landscape of winners and losers was very random in time, with clusters randomly transitioning from the lead position to secondary positions and vice versa, much like a contentious political primary race trying to decide the leader of a party.

These significant fluctuations over long periods of time mimicked recorded activity in the spontaneously active brain. While past models of unclustered brains could not capture this key dynamic, this new model gives a plausible explanation for how spontaneous neural activity arises and is maintained.

These results explore for the first time how the wiring of the nervous system can influence stochastic (or unpredictable) brain dynamics, especially when the brain is spontaneously active. Doiron said there has been significant research on how the brain responds to input -- such as during tasks like remembering a phone number or grasping a cup. However, the neuroscience community has only just begun to think about what is happening in the brain when there are no inputs and the brain is seemingly idle.

"Unlike the quiet states of your computer between processing jobs, the brain has a highly variable and random political fight going on when there are no immediate tasks," said Doiron. "This fight likely consolidates factions and keeps specific networks well linked, a feature that can be crucial for proper brain functioning in driven states."

With their new models, Doiron and Litwin-Kumar plan to investigate how the spontaneous neural dynamics caused by these clustered neurons impact the processing of a stimulus, helping them possibly understand new forms of biological-inspired computation. He said that neural computation is a new field with significant challenges ahead.

"A good start is to understand what is happening in the brain's default spontaneous state, and from there a more comprehensive theory of neural cognition can be made," said Doiron.

The paper was supported by grants from the National Science Foundation, the Sloan Foundation, and the U.S. Department of Defense.

Weekly Security Update | Iraq Business News

Weekly Security Update

By Gary Sandiford, Olive Group?s Dubai based assessments manager.? Olive Group is a leading provider of security and technology solutions and has operated continuously in Iraq since 2003.

?

Overview

Olive Groups Iraq statistics are drawn from multiple sources, including media reporting and direct liaison with in country assets. Included within the statistics are a minority sub-set of serious incidents which may not be purely attributable to insurgent/terrorist groups, such as murder, kidnappings and organised crime activities.

The total number of reported incidents in Iraq for the period 15 ? 21 October 2012 was 144.? This is some way above the 2012 weekly average of 117 and marks a considerable increase in violence following a two week period of relative calm.? The major increases in reporting occurred in Baghdad and the North Central Region, with insurgent violence appearing to be a primary factor.? Given the trend of elevated violence sustained since the end of July, with only brief periods of respite, it now appears more likely that the levels of violence associated with the summer campaign have become the norm, at least in the medium term.?Mosul again featured prominently in national reporting, with both communal and insurgent violence being amongst the most intense across the country. The Tigris and Diyala River Valleys north of Baghdad both saw an appreciable increase in the use of explosive devices ? with a possible campaign to target communications infrastructure occurring across Salah al-Din Province ? while Kirkuk Province and Tuz District, just to its south, both saw surges in the targeting of Iraq Security Forces (ISF), including the use of large car-bombs (VBIEDs).? Overall reporting from Baghdad also increased and in addition to this there were numerous large mass-casualty attacks ? which the capital had been free of during the previous two weeks.? By contrast the southern half of Iraq? meaning here those areas below northern Babil ? remained very quiet with only low level incidents occurring, all of which appear to reflect isolated communal, criminal or political disputes.? This reflects long terms patterns in the Shia majority provinces of southern Iraq.

That's all history thanks to the launch of HealthyOut, a free iPhone app that lets you discover nearby restaurant dishes that match your healthy appetite.

With HealthyOut, people can quickly search for meals by calories and points, popular diets like Paleo or Low Carb or dietary restrictions like Gluten Free and Low Sodium. One of the app's most popular features is the Not a Salad filter. HealthyOut makes it easy and convenient to find healthy food that people still enjoy eating. The app is launching on Food Day to celebrate the movement towards healthy and sustainable food.

Why HealthyOut?
"We are a nation obsessed with dieting," says Wendy Nguyen, CEO of HealthyOut. "But it's not working. HealthyOut was created to help you find convenient food that you still love to eat. We think it all starts with the food."

With two-thirds of American adults struggling with overweight and obesity issues, developing solutions to help people eat healthier has never been more important, especially solutions that fit with people's everyday lifestyles.

"Our team created HealthyOut after speaking with hundreds of nutritionists, dieters, and healthy eaters who told us eating out was a huge issue. People lack the information they need to make smart food choices or often feel trapped into always ordering a salad. HealthyOut solves this problem by giving our users insight into the food they're eating before they step into the restaurant."

What Sets HealthyOut Apart?
Many health and nutrition apps focus on tracking every calorie you consume. HealthyOut wants to take the homework out of healthy eating. With a few taps, you're able to locate nearby restaurants, see what dishes look good and match your diet, and easily look up nutrition information before you order.

"We're bringing nutrition information forward and presenting it in a way that empowers people to make healthier eating choices," says Wendy. "There's a host of nutrition apps out there all focused on tracking. For anyone who's tried calorie counting, they know tracking equals works. We are determined not to make healthy eating a chore. We believe it all starts with finding healthy food that fits your lifestyle, and we can do this in a well-designed, easy to use app."

HealthyOut is piloting in the San Francisco Bay Area where it serves up healthy dishes at both local and chain restaurants. Those living outside of the pilot area can still use HealthyOut to find meal options at national chain restaurants.

Understanding Insurance Benefits During Open Enrollment Season ...

insurance benefits

It?s open enrollment time again for next year?s insurance benefits. This checklist will help you with understanding insurance benefits offered by your employer. With insurance costs rising and benefits falling, we need to be diligent about reviewing policies and shopping around to save.

Your company?s insurance benefits have real value that is calculated as part of your total compensation, so pay attention and maximize these benefits to your full advantage. The deadline to enroll is usually by mid-December, but this varies by employer. A friend of mine has to turn hers in early by Nov. 2nd, so check with your HR manager so you don?t miss your deadline. Some of your benefits *might* get auto carried forward to the next year, but many don?t such as discretionary flex spending, which reset to zero unless you sign up again.

Take Advantage Of Your Insurance Benefits Program

You don?t want to die prematurely or get sick and cause your loved ones a ton of financial pain just because you didn?t check your medical and life insurance benefits options. A few months ago I learned first hand why you should Never Take Your Health For Granted and I have a renewed appreciation for insurance and medical care. Even if we feel fine today, we just don?t know what could happen tomorrow.

We?re all busy people, but putting open enrollment at the bottom of your to do list is careless. You owe it to yourself and your family to take advantage of your benefits program. If you don?t know what ?excess liability insurance? or ?long-term disability insurance? is yet, it?s time to get cracking because ignorance can leave you broke!

Open Enrollment Insurance Checklist

* Medical: Please don?t decline your health insurance benefits! Go with either a PPO (Preferred Provider Organization), EPO (Exclusive Provider Organization) or a HMO (Health Maintenance Organization) provider. The main difference is that PPOs and EPOs don?t require you to choose a Primary Care Physician (PCP) to coordinate and refer you to other specialists in your network. For example, as a PPO or EPO client, you can typically go straight to a rheumatologist, chiropractor, or other specialist for care, which saves time and generally provides you more choices than a HMO network. Keep in mind flexibility and a better selection of doctors will typically cost you more.

Other features to consider are copays and coinsurance.? A copay is where you always have a fixed payment every time you see a doctor, no matter how much your medical services cost. Coinsurance is when you share a certain percentage of the medical cost. In general, copays result in more expensive monthly premiums than coinsurance. If you had a $1,000 knee operation for example, your copay may be just $50 bucks, but with coinsurance, you may have to pay 20% of the entire cost, or $200. Some plans even have a combination of copays plus coinsurance, so make sure you understand what you?re getting before you sign up.

If you feel you may have higher medical expenses in the coming year, the easiest rule is to go with higher premiums because that generally means higher coverage and less out of pocket expense. Of course, don?t forget to ask your provider for clarification. I?ve typically gone with a PPO copay plan that costs about $50/month pre-tax.

* Health Care Flexible Spending Account (FSA):?If you anticipate something major, like knee surgery or corrective vision surgery, you should sign up for flex spending. The maximum you can elect for FSA will be $2,500/year beginning January 1, 2013. In 2012 and prior, companies designated the cap per employee, which was commonly $5,000. All contributions in 2013 will remain pre-tax, however, so you can still save on your highest marginal tax rate.

I typically allocate $500 a year which I use towards copays, an eye exam, contacts, and dental work. Some people find the headache of paperwork outweighs the savings, but I?ve always found it easy to file.?Taxes make me grouchy, especially from a business perspective, so I love taking advantage of ways to lower my tax bill. Just don?t over budget your enrollment annual amount, because you?ll lose whatever you don?t spend or fail to claim.

* Dental:?Pretty straightforward and a necessity because dental work without insurance is crazy expensive. There are many different plans with varying coverage and deductibles. Mine provides two cleanings a year, and 70% coverage on dental work with a $100 deductible a year for $8 bucks. Nothing is ever really ?free,? so watch those deductible costs!

* Vision: Vision insurance benefits provide coverage for eye examination, eye-wear, contacts, eye diseases and surgeries. Those with perfect vision should still consider opting-in if you can find a cheap plan around $3-$5/month. I get vision discounts through my medical insurance, so I?ve chosen not to have a dedicated vision insurance plan. Right now I use my FSA to cover eye exams, new glasses, and contact lenses. As I get older, I will probably start paying for vision insurance since I?m on the computer so much and don?t want to get caught with any big surprises.

* Basic Life:?A token amount of term life insurance that is generally provided free by your employer. My firm provides $50,000 but this can vary greatly by employer. Find out what your coverage is and make sure you have an updated copy of your beneficiaries and their proceed percentages on file.

* Supplemental Life:?More term life insurance that is usually a multiple of your base salary (1X ? 10X is common).? $1,000,000 a year costs less than $20/month and goes up in pretty correlated increments from there.? The amount of supplemental life you need is determined by the amount your dependent needs to pay both your bills without having to worry. The amount is subjective, but I would shoot for at least 5 years of total expenses i.e. add up all expenses such as rent, food, mortgage, travel for the year, and multiply it by 5. This is why you need at least a rough budget!

* Personal Accident Insurance: These insurance benefits are often provided for free by your company if you are in an accident that?s non-travel related and die on the job. I?ve seen ranges of $100,000 to $1,000,000, so best to find out what your coverage is so you don?t have to guess or get caught empty handed.

* Excess Liability Insurance:?Also called an?umbrella policy?which is very important if you have lots of assets which are exposed if you get sued. Simply calculate your?net worth?and get a umbrella policy that?s 50% over your net worth amount to be safe. Cost is usually around $100 per $1,000,000 of coverage a year. Click the link to read more about how an umbrella policy works. This is very important, especially if you have teenagers!

* Short Term Disability:?If you are a construction worker and injure your back and can?t work beyond the amount of your sick leave, short term disability kicks in. Time off for maternity leave is also commonly covered under short term disability. STD insurance benefits typically provide you with 60% of wages for six months, but varies from company to company. The pricing is generally free to a very minimal amount ($5-10/month) if there is any cost at all. Generally there should not be.

* Long Term Disability: These insurance benefits will kick in after you exhaust short term disability and are there to protect you from catastrophic injury or illness.? LTD benefits also typically provide 60% of monthly eligible earnings after short-term disability runs out.? You generally always want a policy that lasts until you are 65, because some plans may only last 5 to 10 years.? Call your health insurance provider and ask.? Costs generally run from $10-$60/month after-tax depending on how much you make.

Add Up All Your Insurance Benefits Options

Completing your open enrollment should give you further appreciation of your firm as well as remind you of how fortunate you are to have a job that offers insurance benefits. Literally millions of people don?t have coverage, not by choice, and any unfortunate mishap could send them into massive debt or poverty.

The value of all your insurance benefits per year can simply be calculated by how much it would cost if you had to pay for everything on your own. The numbers are not pretty. Companies foot huge bills for insurance benefits and most employees never even take the time to realize this, especially those just a few years out of college.

Make sure you don?t take for granted all the benefits your company provides, and fill out your forms before the deadline! The most important thing you can do is educate yourself and your family about all your company?s insurance benefits and ask HR if you are unclear about anything. For those of you who do not have employer sponsored health insurance, you can check out my review of eHealthInsurance here.

Untemplaters, when is your deadline for open enrollment? Are you making any changes to your health insurance benefits?

"Sickened" UCI strips Armstrong of Tour wins

GENEVA (Reuters) - Lance Armstrong was stripped of his seven Tour de France titles and banned for life on Monday after the International Cycling Union (UCI) ratified the United States Anti-Doping Agency's (USADA) sanctions against the American.

The long-awaited decision has left cycling facing its "greatest crisis" according to UCI president Pat McQuaid and has destroyed Armstrong's last hope of clearing his name.

"Lance Armstrong has no place in cycling. Lance Armstrong deserves to be forgotten in cycling," McQuaid told a news conference as he outlined how cycling, long battered by doping problems for decades, would have to start all over again.

"The UCI wishes to begin that journey on that path forward today by confirming that it will not appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport and that it will recognize the sanction that USADA has imposed.

"I was sickened by what I read in the USADA report."

On October 10, USADA published a report into Armstrong which alleged the now-retired rider had been involved in the "most sophisticated, professionalized and successful doping program that sport has ever seen".

Armstrong, 41, had previously elected not to contest USADA charges, prompting USADA to propose his punishment pending confirmation from cycling's world governing body.

Former Armstrong team mates at his U.S. Postal and Discovery Channel outfits, where he won his seven successive Tour titles from 1999 to 2005, testified against him and themselves and were given reduced bans by the American authorities.

"It wasn't until the intervention of federal agents...they called these riders in and they put down a gun and badge on the table in front of them and said 'you're now facing a grand jury you must tell the truth' that those riders broke down," McQuaid added.

Armstrong, widely accepted as one of the greatest cyclists of all time given he fought back from cancer to dominate the sport, has always denied doping and says he has never failed a doping test.

He said he had stopped contesting the charges after years of probes and rumors because "there comes a point in every man's life when he has to say, 'Enough is enough'".

WIDESPREAD DOPING

McQuaid, who faced criticism from several quarters for his and the UCI's handling of the affair, said he would not be resigning.

"Cycling has a future. This is not the first time cycling has reached a crossroads or that it has had to begin anew," he said in front of a packed room full of journalists and television cameras.

"When I took over (as president) in 2005 I made the fight against doping my priority. I acknowledged cycling had a culture of doping. Cycling has come a long way. I have no intention of resigning as president of the UCI.

"I am sorry we couldn't catch every damn one of them red handed and throw them out of the sport."

Other issues such as the potential re-awarding of Armstrong's Tour titles and the matter of prize money will be discussed by the UCI Management Committee on Friday.

Tour director Christian Prudhomme has said he believes no rider should inherit the titles given doping was so widespread among the peloton at the time but McQuaid made it clear the decision rested with his organization, not the Tour.

USADA charged five people over the doping ring. Doctors Luis Garcia del Moral and Michele Ferrari and trainer Pepe Marti have been banned for life while Armstrong's mentor Johan Bruyneel has chosen to go to arbitration along with doctor Pedro Celaya.

Armstrong's last hope that the UCI might not ratify USADA's ruling sprang from long-running dispute between the two bodies over who should handle the case.

In statements issued at the news conference, the UCI continued the feud with USADA despite ratifying its decision.

"Even apart from any discussion on jurisdiction, it would have been better that the evidence collected by USADA had been assessed by a neutral body or person who was not involved in collecting the evidence and prosecuting the defendant," it said.

"This would have avoided both the criticism of a witch hunt against Mr Armstrong and the criticism that the UCI had a conflict of interest."

The UCI also said it had dope tested Armstrong 218 times and the fact he never tested positive and "beat the system" means that other organizations such as the World Anti-Doping Agency should share the responsibility of accepting the results.

USADA chief Travis Tygart issued a statement approving of the UCI's action but warning that more needed to be done.

"Despite its prior opposition to USADA's investigation into doping on the U.S. Postal Service cycling team and within the sport, USADA is glad that the UCI finally reversed course in this case and has made the credible decision available to it," he said.

"This determination to uphold USADA's decision on the U.S. Postal Services case does not by itself clean up cycling nor does it ensure the sport has moved past the obstacles that allowed doping to flourish in the age of EPO and blood transfusions.

"For cycling to truly move forward and for the world to know what went on in cycling, it is essential that an independent and meaningful Truth and Reconciliation Commission be established so that the sport can fully unshackle itself from the past."

In recent years the Tour de France and cycling had looked to be winning the battle against dopers but when asked if the sport would one day be free of the scourge, McQuaid answered: "No."

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) said it would take its time to digest the news amid suggestions that Armstrong could be stripped of his 2000 Sydney Olympics time trial bronze.

"We will study UCI's response to the USADA report and await to receive their full decision including further potential sanctions against Lance Armstrong as well as regarding any ramifications to his case," an IOC official said.

Hill leaders niche players in national campaign

(AP) ? At the top of their roosts in Washington, leaders of Congress are, as usual, turning out to be niche players on the national campaign stage.

The Senate's top two leaders, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., are tending to home-state politics.

Not so in the House, where Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, and his Democratic counterpart, Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi of California., are crisscrossing the country, siphoning every last dollar of campaign cash they can find to help win House seats.

More junior House and Senate leaders are out campaigning and raising money as well ? not just to win this year's races, but to shore up rank-and-file support for when it's their turn to run for the top jobs on Capitol Hill.

For Reid, all politics is local. For the most part, he's staying in Nevada, where he is at the helm of a powerhouse political machine that's fully cranked up on behalf of President Barack Obama. Nevada is a crucial swing state and one that Obama increasingly needs to hold as polls show states like North Carolina and Florida slipping away and Virginia tightening.

On top of his efforts to help of Obama, Reid is working hard to unseat appointed GOP Sen. Dean Heller, who replaced Republican Sen. John Ensign, who resigned last year after a scathing report from the Senate Ethics Committee on his efforts to cover up an affair with the wife of a top aide.

Reid had a non-aggression pact with Ensign ? they promised to not campaign against each other ? but he's been very active in promoting the Senate candidacy of Rep. Shelley Berkeley and the campaign of Democrat Steven Horsford in a newly drawn House district.

Reid's appeal doesn't extend outside Nevada, however. Republicans and groups supporting them are vilifying him in speeches, debates and attack ads on Democrats in Senate races around the country. Not doing retail politics outside the state suits Reid, 72, just fine. That's all the more time at home in Searchlight with his wife Landra, who's recuperating from a recent round of chemotherapy for breast cancer.

House Speaker Boehner, on the other hand, is anything but a homebody. Since the House recessed Sept. 21, he's been on the road nonstop, raising money, rallying GOP volunteers and appearing at rallies for GOP nominee Mitt Romney in states like Iowa and North Carolina.

Boehner travels in a chartered jet accompanied by a couple of aides and a U.S. Capitol Police security detail. His effort resembles a presidential campaign in that its itinerary is subject to change depending on changes in the political landscape.

Confident that most GOP incumbents are safe, for instance, Boehner is now taking the fight to a lot of Democratic-held districts, including a trip to Iowa on this week for a fundraiser for GOP House candidate Ben Lange, who nonetheless faces an uphill battle to unseat Democrat Bruce Braley.

Boehner political aide Corey Fritz says the speaker's schedule might allow for a night or two to sleep in his own bed in West Chester before heading out for a traditional three-day bus tour of Ohio. On Election Day he'll vote, then head to Washington to watch the results in his political shop.

Democratic Leader Pelosi has been just as busy as Boehner. Pelosi is a powerhouse fundraiser, and her efforts are ever more important to her party because of the outsized impact of GOP super PACs that can accept uncapped donations.

On Tuesday, Pelosi will be in New York City for a fundraiser to benefit a Democratic super PAC called the House Majority PAC. The event at the Park Avenue apartment of investment banker Charles Myers has a minimum donation of $500, though guest can give unlimited amounts.

Unlike Boehner, Pelosi flies commercial. Her office says that in September, Pelosi attended 77 fundraising and campaign events in five states and Washington that raised more than $7 million for Democratic coffers. In the five weeks before up to the election, 65 fundraising and campaign appearances were on her schedule.

Senate Republican Leader McConnell, himself a hand-over-fist fundraiser, has mixed travel across the country to raise campaign cash for Senate Republicans with time back home in Kentucky helping in GOP efforts to wrench the state house from longtime Democratic control and unseat one of the state's two Democratic congressmen, Ben Chandler.

McConnell, a dominant force in the state's GOP, is up for re-election in 2014. His politicking in Kentucky helps keep the party apparatus ? much of which he helped build since winning election in 1984 ? in fighting shape for his bid for a sixth term and keep at bay any potential tea party-style challenger from the right.

Lower ranking leaders are in on the act as well.

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., is splitting his time between his central Virginia district and the road. On Saturday, Cantor was in Ann Arbor, Mich., visiting his daughter while mixing in a tailgating event aimed at boosting Romney.

For Cantor and other leaders like Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., campaign events and fundraisers with GOP candidates help nurture relationships that may pay off in later leadership races.

The same holds true for Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer of Maryland, patiently waiting behind onetime rival Pelosi for a chance to be Democratic leader. Since September, he's cut a campaign and fundraising swath through Washington State, Arizona, Colorado, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Illinois, among other states.

New Poll Shows Presidential Race Still Deadlocked

The race between President Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney is deadlocked among likely voters in the Nov. 6 general election, according to a new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll released on Sunday.

The poll indicates a slight shift in Romney?s favor since late September, when the GOP presidential nominee trailed 49 percent to 46 percent among likely voters in the two news organizations' polling.

The newest poll shows Obama with a slight advantage among a wider universe of registered voters. That finding, consistent with other surveys, suggests that if Republicans are successful in denying Obama a second term, it will be driven in part by a turnout advantage over the Democrats.

Obama and Romney are tied among likely voters in the poll, each with 47 percent of the vote. Among all registered voters, Obama holds a lead over Romney, 49 percent to 44 percent.

The poll also shows a significant gender gap, with Romney leading among male voters likely to cast ballots, by 53 percent to 43 percent, while Obama leads among women likely to vote, 51 percent to 43 percent.

Ahead of Monday?s presidential debate over foreign policy, the poll reported Romney had closed the once wide gap over which candidate could better manage the country?s international affairs. Obama led by just 3 percentage points over Romney when respondents were asked who would be a better commander-in-chief, 44 percent to 41 percent, a 5-point swing toward Romney from late September.

But that question was asked of registered voters, a group generally more favorable to Romney, meaning his advantage on a key foreign policy question is possibly smaller, if not erased entirely, among likely voters.

Obama maintained large leads on several other important metrics, such as likeability, dealing with issues of concern to women, and looking out for the middle class.

Senior Obama adviser David Axelrod dismissed the poll Sunday on NBC's Meet the Press, pointing out that the network had sponsored polls this week showing the president with a sizable lead in the battleground states of Iowa and Wisconsin. Axelrod said he is more focused on early voting, which he says has favored Obama, than public polling, which he called ?all over the map.?

Regardless, he added, it?s not a surprise that the race would be close with two weeks left. ?If you look back on tape, every time I've visited with you, I've predicted this is going to be a close race,? he said.

Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., pointed to a shrinking gender gap as evidence that Obama?s message to women is starting to wither because he doesn't talk enough about his plans to turn the economy around in his second term.

?What?s he going to do the next four years so women can find jobs?? Rubio asked. ?That?s the number one issue in America. That?s the number two issue in America.?

The poll was conducted Oct. 17-20 by Democratic pollster Peter Hart and Republican pollster Bill McInturff. It consisted of interviews with 1,000 registered voters, 816 of whom were deemed likely to vote. The margin of error for the full poll was plus-or-minus 3.1 percentage points, with a slightly higher margin of plus-or-minus 3.4 percentage points for likely voters.

Peace of Mind Float Spa L.L.C. is Lake Tahoe's premiere Sensory Deprivation (Float Tank) destination. We provide 2 float tanks as well as a Far Infared Sauna and an Aroma Therapy Oxygen Bar to enhance your complete flotation experience. Operated by Karin and Darin Nobriga, long time Tahoe locals. We provide the most relaxing mind and body experience in the Tahoe basin.

We're located at 290 Kingsbury Grade, Stateline, Nevada next to the Goal Post and a quarter mile from the Stateline casinos. We offer local and casino employee discounts and encourage those who haven't floated, to try the most relaxing experience of their lives.
What is Floating?
Floating is a therapeutic treatment that isolates the user from environmental stimulus, greatly reducing stress, and easing the body into a state of equilibrium. Floating is also known as flotation therapy, floating therapy, float therapy, restricted environmental stimulation therapy (or REST), and Epsom salt hydrotherapy. The flotation tank is referred to as an isolation tank, sensory deprivation chamber, float tank, floating tank, and rest tank.

The flotation tank itself is a sensory deprivation pod with 10 inch deep water warmed to 93.5 degrees and enriched with 800 pounds of Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate). The tank has an advanced filtration/purification system that operates according to regulations from the State of Nevada.

The space inside is approximately 8 feet long by 4 feet wide. Although some may be wary of feeling claustrophobic the first time they float, the tank door opens freely and you are in complete control. You can come and go as you wish. You can also float with the door open. For those who would like audio stimulation, relaxing music is available.
The experience of floating is unique. Inside the tank you?ll float effortlessly on the surface of 93.5 degree water. Floaters feel a sense of weightlessness. That weightlessness, the temperature of the water, and the dark, quiet space of the tank allow the brain to ease into a theta* brain wave state. This usually happens in the second half hour of a one hour float session. First time floaters should not expect instant results. Generally it takes more than one float to completely ?let go? and fully experience flotation.

Divas Can Cook ? 7-Day Diet Weight Loss Cabbage Soup

  • ~TIPS~
  • Jazz it up by adding lots of spices, herbs and a variety of veggies.
  • This makes enough for about 3 days.
  • Keeps well in the fridge for about 3 day.

I?m going to Disneyland next week and decided that I didn?t want to take my muffin top with me, especially since I have this cute form fitting top that I want to wear so bad WITHOUT SPANKS!! When I need to lose my gut or 10 pounds quickly I turn to 3 diets that never lets me down; my smoothie diet, The 17 Day Diet (review coming soon) and my newest love, the 7-day diet!!

I know some people HATE these kinda diets but I love them! They work well for me and the weight stays off as long as you eat a healthy, balance diet afterwards. I never do though since I mainly use these diets for quick weight loss for an event, the week before Thanksgiving, or ?to jumpstart my spring dieting before swimsuit season.

OK so let?s talk about the 7-day diet!! It?s an old diet that has been around for YEARS and revised over and over again. You are likely to find several different version online. ?Lately these 7-day diets have become really popular. Even Dr. Oz has one. I first read about it on Justin and Ashley?s blog (she answers a lot of questions about this diet so if you have them, check out her FAQS section) I think this diet is a great cleanse because I always feel so refreshed and clean inside and out afterwards.

wonder soup recipe weight loss soup recipe cabbage soup diet

I NEVER thought I?d like this soup, but it?s so good!

On the 7-day diet you follow a certain eating plan everyday. Along with eating these specific foods you are allowed to have cabbage soup aka wonder soup aka weight loss soup aka miracle soup aka weight watcher soup whenever you?d like. ?This is what drew me to the 7-day diet because I love that I can eat this soup in unlimited quantities. I HATE being hungry and I will not stick to any kind of diet if I?m hungry. Point. Blank. Period. Don?t forget you MUST drink 8 glasses of water each day. My results vary if I slack on water, but 8-10 pounds is what I usually lose.

Now about this weight loss Cabbage Soup (Wonder Soup), the website (my7daydiet.com) says you should boil the vegetables in water, uh?no ma?am!! I?ve always used chicken broth or vegetable broth with seasoned canned tomatoes and it has never hindered my weight loss. There is NO WAY I would be eating this soup everyday if I made it according to the recipe on the site. Yuck! ?Throughout the diet I also use salt, pepper, lots of herbs & seasonings, olive oil, and a tad of butter. I also add 0-5 calorie flavorings to my water to make sure I get in all my water. These changes have never affected my results.

So here is a brief overview of the diet plan. ?Get more details on my7daydiet.com

Day 1- Eat nothing but fruit today (except for bananas) and as much of the diet cabbage soup as you?d like. I like to eat baked cinnamon apples in the morning, a large fruit salad and cabbage soup for lunch, and cabbage soup and a melon salad for dinner. I snack on fruit throughout the day, usually frozen berries, grapes and watermelon.

Day 2- Eat nothing but vegetables (except corn or other starchy veggies). However, you do get to start the day with a baked potato. You will LOVE having this baked potato trust me! I never thought I?d be so happy to eat a baked potato in the morning! I put a tad bit of salt and butter (I cheat) on the potato along with some broccoli and tomatoes. For lunch I do the cabbage soup and salad sprinkle with salt, pepper and olive oil. This is actually pretty good. For dinner I do mashed cauliflower topped with a stir fry.

Day 3- ?Today you eat fruits AND veggies (except bananas, corn and other starchy veggies) You also don?t get a potato today, sucks! I just do a repeat of day one and two for my foods.

Day 4- Today you eat only bananas and milk/yogurt. This is the DUMBEST day by far. I hate it. You can only have bananas and milk. I eat bananas, rice milk, almond milk and yogurts and of course the miracle soup. It?s not that difficult, but if you hate bananas I feel sorry for you boo.

Day 5- ?Today eat only tomatoes (6-8) and protein like fish, turkey and chicken. I had no problems with this day since I love meat and was happy to get it! I had wonder ?soup for breakfast and added extra tomatoes since I don?t like tomatoes plain that much. For lunch I had grilled chicken topped with tomatoes seasoned with salt, basil, pepper. For dinner I had more wonder soup, but I add ground seasoned turkey to it. Very filling. I got tired of the soup on this day.

Day 6- ?Today it?s protein and veggies- Unlike yesterday you can have other veggies besides tomatoes. I had a salad for breakfast seasoned with olive oil, spices, salt and pepper. For lunch I had a stir-fry with chicken, spices and veggies (so good) for lunch I had a spaghetti squash with pasta sauce and ground turkey. I think spaghetti squash is off limits but I had to have it! (it didn?t effect my weight loss) Today was so yummy! lol

Day 7- ?Today it?s just fruits, vegetables, and juices. Booo!!! I hated this day because I wanted more meat, but I was glad it was the last day. The scale says I?m 7 pounds lighter this morning so that was great to see. I feel clean inside. I?m hungry today though. REALLY HUNGRY!

Day 8- 10lbs down this morning and I can see it!!

Watch me make this Weight Loss Cabbage Soup Recipe (Wonder Soup) from start to finish!
