Rodman tells Kim Jong Un he has 'friend for life'

(AP) ? Ex-NBA star Dennis Rodman hung out Thursday with North Korea's Kim Jong Un on the third day of his improbable journey with VICE to Pyongyang, watching the Harlem Globetrotters with the leader and later dining on sushi and drinking with him at his palace.

"You have a friend for life," Rodman told Kim before a crowd of thousands at a gymnasium where they sat side by side, chatting as they watched players from North Korea and the U.S. play, Alex Detrick, a spokesman for the New York-based VICE media company, told The Associated Press.

Rodman arrived in Pyongyang on Monday with three members of the professional Harlem Globetrotters basketball team, VICE correspondent Ryan Duffy and a production crew to shoot an episode on North Korea for a new weekly HBO series.

The unlikely encounter makes Rodman the most high-profile American to meet Kim since the young North Korean leader took power in December 2011, and takes place against a backdrop of tension between Washington and Pyongyang. North Korea conducted an underground nuclear test just two weeks ago, making clear the provocative act was a warning to the United States to drop what it considers a "hostile" policy toward the North.

Kim, a diehard basketball fan, told the former Chicago Bulls star he hoped the visit would break the ice between the United States and North Korea, VICE founder Shane Smith said.

Dressed in a blue Mao suit, Kim laughed and slapped his hands on the table before him during the game as he sat nearly knee to knee with Rodman. Rodman, the man who once turned up in a wedding dress to promote his autobiography, wore a dark suit and dark sunglasses, but still had on his nose rings and other piercings. A can of Coca-Cola sat on the table before him in photos shared with AP by VICE.

"The crowd was really engaged, laughed at all of the Globetrotters antics, and actually got super loud towards the end as the score got close," said Duffy, who suited up for the game in a blue uniform emblazoned with "United States of America. "Most fun I've had in a while."

Kim and Rodman chatted in English, but Kim primarily spoke in Korean through a translator, Smith said after speaking to the VICE crew in Pyongyang.

"They bonded during the game," Smith said by telephone from New York after speaking to the crew. "They were both enjoying the crazy shots, and the Harlem Globetrotters were putting on quite a show."

The surprise visit by the flamboyant Hall of Famer known as "The Worm" makes him an unlikely ambassador at a time when North Koreans are girding for battle with the U.S. Just last week, Kim guided frontline troops in military exercises.

North Korea and the U.S. fought on opposite sides of the three-year Korean War, which ended in a truce in 1953. The foes never signed a peace treaty, and do not have diplomatic relations.

Thursday's game ended in a 110-110 draw, with two Americans playing on each team alongside North Koreans, Detrick said. The Xinhua News Agency first reported on the game, citing witnesses who attended.

After the game, Rodman addressed Kim in a speech before a crowd of tens of thousands of North Koreans, telling him, "You have a friend for life," Detrick said.

At a lavish dinner at Kim's palace, the leader plied the group with food and drinks as the group made round after round of toasts.

"Dinner was an epic feast. Felt like about 10 courses in total," Duffy said in an email to AP. "I'd say the winners were the smoked turkey and sushi, though we had the Pyongyang cold noodles earlier in the trip and that's been the runaway favorite so far."

Duffy said he invited Kim to visit the United States, a proposal met with hearty laughter from the North Korean leader.

"Um ... so Kim Jong Un just got the (hash)VICEonHBO crew wasted ... no really, that happened," VICE producer Jason Mojica wrote on Twitter.

Rodman's trip is the second attention-grabbing U.S. visit this year to North Korea. Google's executive chairman, Eric Schmidt, made a four-day trip in January to Pyongyang, but did not meet the North Korean leader.

Extending an invitation to a man known as much for his piercings, tattoos and bad behavior as for his basketball may seem inexplicable. But Kim is known to love the NBA, and has promoted sports since becoming leader.

"We knew that he's a big lover of basketball, especially the Bulls, and it was our intention going in that we would have a good-will mission of something that's fun," Smith said. "A lot of times, things just are serious and everybody's so concerned with geopolitics that we forget just to be human beings."

Rodman's agent, Darren Prince, said Rodman wasn't concerned about criticism about making a visit to an enemy nation.

"Dennis called me last night and said it's been a great experience and he made this trip out of the love of the USA ," he said. "It's all about peace and love."

A Look into the Future with Google Glass

Much like any piece of technology reminiscent of something seen in a retro edition of Star Trek, the Google Glass raises an eyebrow of apprehension ? a gimmicky looking device that instantly abolishes any notion of style before seeking out its function. Once explored however, the Google Glass ? an eyeglass hailed as the next era of computing ? may actually change the way we interact. Now in its early prototype stages, the wearable computer is being put to the test after only 18 months of product experimentation and around three years in concept. Explored first hand by theverge.com?s Joshua Topolsky, the Google Glass clearly paves a way for users to connect with each other and technology like never before, and in a hands-free, easy-to-communicate manner ? another step closer to the future depicted by bygone science fiction scenes. Watch the above video to fully explore the first ever look at the Google Glass.

'Amazon tax' payoff starts to arrive in California, other states

Sales tax from Internet commerce, a prize pursued for years by U.S. state governments, is starting to arrive in California and a few other states, providing millions of dollars in new revenue, though not as much as a benchmark study once forecast.

After fighting hard to get e-tailers such as Amazon.com to start charging sales tax, and eventually passing a law requiring collection, the California Board of Equalization reported last week it took in $96.4 million in September-December 2012, its first full quarter of collections.

Coinciding with the holiday shopping season, that result put the state well on its way to meeting its forecast budget of $107 million in new e-taxes for the fiscal year that began July 1, 2012, as set by the California Department of Finance.

But that revenue falls far short of ambitious expectations set in 2009 by a University of Tennessee study that greatly influenced the online sales tax debate nationwide.

The study estimated that California, if it did not act to collect more online sales tax, would miss out on as much as $1.9 billion in 2012 revenue. Nationwide, it estimated, states would fail to collect $11.4 billion in 2012.

The Tennessee study fueled states' demands in recent years for more tax power over online commerce. Like California, more states will be collecting new e-revenues in months ahead. So it is too soon to make firm judgments, but early results suggest

the Tennessee study and others like it were over-ambitious.

"To the extent the estimates being used are overstating reality, and I think they are, it is not solving anyone's deficit problem," said Jeff Eisenach, a managing director at economic research group Navigant Economics.

Eisenach co-authored a study on e-commerce and sales tax and said he advises being "conservative rather than hopeful."

Eisenach's study, sponsored by NetChoice, a trade group that opposes online taxation, pegged the national online sales tax potential at $3.9 billion, about a third of Tennessee's number.

The dawning of sales tax as a reality in the world of online commerce marks a turning point not only for the states that are starting to collect it, but for Internet vendors and consumers.

Amazon, for instance, for many years and in most states, did not collect sales tax, enjoying as a result a pricing advantage over older, bricks-and-mortar retailers. That is changing fast.

At the moment, Amazon is collecting sales tax in nine states including California, and will add seven more in the next year. In some states the online retailer has struck agreements to collect, in others like California and New York it is complying with new state law.

Having to do that may partly explain a recent deceleration in growth for the world's largest online retailer, said RBC Capital Markets analyst Mark Mahaney, though he added that over time that effect should ease.

For consumers in states where the tax is now being charged online, it means an end to tax-free shopping on the web, at least when it comes to the largest and most developed e-tailers.

Despite moderating revenue expectations, more states are sure to keep pushing for e-commerce taxation because that is where the growth is. Online sales growth has outpaced that of traditional stores for years. By 2015, $175 billion a year will migrate online from stores, Deloitte Consulting estimated.

In the long struggle between states and e-tailers over online sales tax, the Tennessee study was widely cited by those who have pushed for more taxation at the state level and for national legislation to address the issue.

Some state politicians have used figures similar to that of the Tennessee study as a basis for building future Internet sales tax receipts into their budgets.

Virginia Governor Robert McDonnell has projected the state could get $1.6 billion in online sales tax over the next five years. He has predicted that Congress will pass by July 1 a bill to give states the right to require online retailers to collect sales tax. Though this measure has languished in Congress for years, it has recently gained some new political support.

On Thursday, 53 members of the Senate and the House of Representatives reintroduced the bill in Congress.

Representative Steve Womack, a Republican from Arkansas, where the nation's largest brick-and-mortar retailer Wal-Mart Stores is based, said the lack of collection of sales tax online is hurting state and local governments.

"It affects everybody," he said at a press conference for the bill. "It affects schools. It affects policemen, it affects firemen, it affects anybody engaged in public service."

Amazon quickly pledged its support for the national legislation, as it has done in the past.

At the same time, in New York, Amazon and Overstock.com are fighting a state sales tax collection law.

Retailers there are collecting the tax as they fight it out in court. Online retailers have remitted $360 million in sales tax on more than $4 billion in taxable retail sales as of February 2012, according to the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance.

That is 90 percent of all taxable online sales, New York said, but far less than the $2.5 billion the University of Tennessee study predicted for the state over the same period.

In Georgia, the most recent state to require sales tax collection by remote sellers, local retailers said Amazon is not collecting sales tax though the law has required it to do so since January 1. The state's proposed fiscal 2014 budget includes $18 million in new Internet sales tax revenue.

Amazon declined to comment.

"If this revenue doesn't come through we'll have to cut education or some other important area," said Georgia Senator Steve Henson, Democratic leader of the state Senate.

Professor William Fox, leader of the Tennessee study, said that the difference between his study's estimates and lower state collections may reflect the fact that smaller e-retailers often are exempt from collection.

Broader trends support the study's findings, he said, including the fact that sales tax collections have lagged overall economic growth. To Fox, that suggests that untaxed e-commerce has grown, continuing to sap sales taxes.

Visiting speaker examines ending white supremacy

By Kelsey Roebuck, roebuckk@grinnell.edu

Visiting speaker Adeyemi Balogun conducted a workshop Tuesday on dismantling white supremacy that ranged from capitalism?s links to racial injustice to slave codes to incarceration rates among African-Americans today. Balogun is a member of the Black Autonomy Federation, an anti-authoritarian organization that concentrates on self-determination for the black community of the United States and the oppressed all over the world. Balogun decided to explore oppression through the intersection of colonialism and economics after reading work by political prisoners. His workshop was entitled ?Dismantling White Supremacy: A Decolonization Training.? Vincent Kelley ?16, a member of the campus group Anti-Oppression Peer Education Network (OPEN), invited Balogun to speak at Grinnell after meeting him through their mutual involvement in Deep Green Resistance, a radical environmentalist group.

Visiting speaker Adeyemi Balogun led a workshop on ending white supremacy Tuesday in the JRC. Photo by John Brady

He said he appreciated Balogun?s unique approach to race in the United States. ?I think that a lot of people are under the impression that we live in a post-racial society,? Kelley said. ?A lot of times I also think that anti-racism work is often treated as a topic unto itself and is not connected to other systems such as global capitalism.? Balogun?s workshop explored the institutions and philosophies that contribute to that status quo in the United States as well as on a global scale. He began by emphasizing that historic conflicts have yet to be resolved in modern society. ?Most people don?t know that, over the last year, more black people have been summarily executed by police than were killed during the height of lynch mob and Klan activity in the early part of the twentieth century,? Balogun said. During Balogun?s workshop, he explained that white supremacy was and is an ?institutionally-based? system of oppression used by America and European nations to create and maintain their positions of wealth and power. According to him, white supremacy functions through distorted perceptions. ?For white supremacy to function, it must control how people perceive the world,? Balogun said. To prove his point, Balogun analyzed America in the early 1700s. During that time, a substantial working class composed of white indentured servants, native peoples and enslaved Africans posed a considerable threat to the status quo. Following a series of multiracial slave rebellions, the ?slave codes? were created to raise the status of indentured servants. According to Balogun, this was also the first time that European servants were referred to as white in an official capacity. As a result, the ruling class weakened their opposition by dividing the working classes along racial lines. ?The concept of whiteness is itself rooted in white supremacy,? Balogun said. ?It is a culture defined by what you?re not rather than what you are.? From this early point in American colonial history, Balogun drew parallels to more contemporary racial legislation. According to him, the new laws following abolition, called the black codes, essentially made it illegal to be African American, thereby supporting the same system established by the slave codes. ?They created a new system of enslavement built on incarceration,? Balogun said. He drew these connections between the transatlantic slave trade and the modern prison system by illustrating that, in the capitalist society that evolved from early colonialism, there is an economic benefit to oppressing groups of people. ?Whenever they have implemented something like [the black codes], it has coincided with the expansion of the empire. At the same time they were doing this, they were also creating the reservation system?incarcerating native people,? Balogun said. This pattern of oppression for the economic benefit can be seen in U.S. policy in the last twenty years of violence in Africa. ?We are constantly looking to exploit new resources from all over the world,? Balogun said. ?That?s why colonialism, it hasn?t changed. It?s good for business to keep certain countries destabilized in order for them to operate mining interests and stuff like that.? As part of the workshop format, Balogun opened the floor for questions and students asked about everything from the status of black women in this colonial enterprise to what methods were being used to combat the this year?s high rate of police brutality against African Americans in Memphis. As Balogun answered these questions he pointed out that, after considering the systematic support system underlying white supremacy, it will take radical institutional and economic change before racism becomes a thing of the past. Balogun recommended organizing to combat capitalism as an inherently corrupt and failing economic institution that perpetuates white supremacy. ?Dismantling white supremacy means dismantling capitalism itself,? he said.

Kid raps his Bar Mitzvah save the date invitation using Welcome to Atlanta sports theme (Video)

By Larry Brown February 21, 2013 - Posted in YouTubeage

Daniel BlumenThis video is a shout out to all my Jewish brethren out there who wanted a Wu-Tang Clan-themed Bar Mitzvah but their parents wouldn?t allow it (yes, I was going to have a different table for all the Wu members). Lest you thought the events portrayed in movies like ?Keeping Up with the Steins? were exaggerated, we have this video to prove that the sort of thing does happen in real life.

A 12-year-old kid named Daniel Blumen aka ?D Mazel Tov? put together a rap video as his Bar Mitzvah?s save the date invitation. Though his rap skills could use some work, the video is high in production value and the lyrics are strong.

He?s got nothing on B-Rad from Malibu?s O.P.P.-themed Bar Mitzvah, but we give him applause for the effort.

The flying costs for him and his ungrateful wife and kids is a staggering amount and it think it should be displayed beside the national debt sign total. He is spending $500,000 an hour on this flying vacation while his family flew to Aspen to ski at the same time on separate a separate plane at a time when our country is borrowing 46 cents for every dollar spent. This alone where he literally lives in AF 1 every single day flying anywhere he dreams up to make a little 15 minute speach to some black kids then he flys to Chicago for a trip to man's world then its on back to the family. College hoops has been hit with a heavy dose of madness

If March represents the madness that is college basketball, then February is the fever leading up to it.

The season is in full swing and with less than a month until Selection Sunday, you don't have to be Gus Johnson to know it's been an exciting one. If the NCAA Tournament is known for its "one shining moment,'' then the second half of the season has been a supernova of those.

From the five-overtime game between Notre Dame and Louisville, to a half-court buzzer-beater Wisconsin used to send its game against Michigan into overtime, to the inbounds play Illinois used to beat Indiana, it's been one amazing game after another.

"If you are a college basketball fan, you are looking at this as one of the best seasons that you can remember," said Seth Davis, who is the host of the show Courtside with Seth Davis on CBS Sports Network. "It's just been tremendous."

Indiana, Duke, Louisville and Michigan have all held the top spot in the Associated Press top 25 poll at one time or another, with the Hoosiers having spent seven weeks at No. 1. Yet, no team appears front-and-center as the most dominant team in college basketball.

It's nothing new, according to Davis.

"If you look historically and even in recent history, it's actually an exception when you have one team really standing out," Davis said. "This is actually closer to the norm, where you have sort of a wide array of teams having this musical chairs at the top.

"Now, it may seem like this year that the losses are coming fast and furious. It seems like they all are kind of losing at once."

That's an understatement.

For a while there, it appeared nobody wanted to be the top team in the country .. except maybe Miami.

The Hurricanes have been one of the most pleasant surprises this season, with Jim Larranaga's bunch jumping out to a 19-3 record, including an impressive 11-0 mark in the ultra-competitive Atlantic Coast Conference. The stretch includes 20-plus point routs of Duke AND North Carolina.

"I have to say Miami has to be one of the bigger surprises," Davis said. "I knew that they would be good, but I don't think anyone could have predicted that they would be this good."

Davis said this is the perfect season for a team like Miami, which features a roster loaded with senior talent.

"Just the fact that they were able to handle the success of that Duke win and not have any kind of a lull to me was unbelievably impressive," Davis said. "I think that really bodes well for them down the road."

Meanwhile, the Southeastern Conference continues to struggle, with only Florida and Kentucky as the teams to beat. However, the loss of Nerlens Noel, could change part of that equation.

"I can't remember the last time the SEC was this bad," said Davis, who is quick to point out that Kentucky did win the national championship last season.

"It's just cyclical," Davis said. "They won't be down long."

It is good news for Florida fans, who believe this year's Gators team could contend for the school's third national basketball title in the past decade.

If the regular season is any indication of the NCAA Tournament drama, then we are in for quite a treat.

Big East close to new television deal

We should know sometime in the next week or so whether the Big East Conference will have a new television home for its sports. Sources told ESPN.com's Brett McMurphy this week that ESPN will have until Thursday to decide whether the sports network will match a seven-year, $20-23 million per year offer that the league received from NBC Sports Network. ESPN currently holds the television rights to the Big East and must decide whether or not it wants to continue its working relationship. Big East officials turned down a nine-year, $1.17 billion offer in 2011 when the league appeared to be on more stable ground. Since then, the league is battling to stay solvent with 16 teams having left or plan on leaving the Big East in the future. The NBC Sports Network deal would pay teams $2 million per year.

Big Ten has its fill of 'cupcakes'

The Big Ten will discontinue the practice of scheduling teams from the Football Championship Subdivision, according to Wisconsin athletics director Barry Alvarez. The league is considering going from an eight-game conference schedule to a nine-or-10 game league schedule, possibly after the addition of Rutgers and Maryland in 2014. It would help the conference deal with the extra weight a new four-team playoff system will be putting on nonconference games. With a selection committee using strength of schedule as part of its determining factors, teams are maneuvering to improve the quality of their schedules. Dropping FCS opponents would do a lot to improve the Big Ten's stature. Are you listening, SEC?

New rules aimed at player safety

In an effort to increase player safety, the NCAA's Football Rules Committee approved a proposal last week stating any player who targets a defenseless player with an above the shoulders hit will face an ejection. It's a trend that has raised concern not just in the college ranks, but in the NFL as well ? especially in light of the recent wave of concussion concerns. Air Force coach Troy Calhoun, who serves as the chairman of the committee, said that there were 99 "targeting penalties" last season that would qualify as worthy of ejections under the new proposal. Under the proposal, which still needs the approval of the Playing Rules Oversight Panel, a player who is ejected during the first half of a game will only be forced to miss that game. If a player is ejected during the second half or overtime, that player will have to sit out the first half of the team's next game. The Playing Rules Oversight Panel meets again March 6.

New York ~ Personal Income Tax: Estimated Tax Penalty Relief ...

The New York Department of Taxation and Finance has announced that it will provide relief to farmers and fishermen who are unable to file and pay their 2012 personal income tax and metropolitan commuter transportation mobility tax (MCTMT) by the March 1 deadline. Generally, if an estimated tax payment is not made on January 15 for personal income tax purposes, or on January 31 for MCTMT purposes, such taxpayers are not subject to a penalty if they file their return and pay the full amount of tax due by March 1. However, under the penalty relief, such taxpayers will not be subject to the underpayment of estimated tax penalty if they file and pay their tax due by April 15, 2013, for personal income tax purposes, or by April 30, 2013, for MCTMT purposes.

?

Taxpayers do not need to take any special action with New York to be eligible for the penalty relief. This relief is being provided in response to the Internal Revenue Service?s announcement that it will provide relief from its estimated tax penalty for farmers and fishermen unable to file and pay their 2012 taxes by the March 1 deadline due to the delayed start for filing tax returns.

What happens when two Windows Phone nerds collide?

We?re all pretty big fans of Windows Phone here. Some of us have been using it since day one with devices like the HTC HD7, and others have just started with newer devices like the Lumia 920. As the third place mobile OS there is a lot of passion from users. We don?t have a cool nickname for die hard Windows Phone fans, but we?certainly?need one. With all this passion flying around there is bound to be some nerd fights.

On Twitter a couple days ago a Windows Phone nerd fight of monumental proportions went down. The participants? Ben ?the PC Guy? Rudolph and Tom Warren from The Verge. It all started with Ben tweeting that he finally got his hands on a yellow Lumia 920. From their it snowballed into a ?who has more Windows Phones laying around? fight. After many colorful photos were shared the winner was finally determined. Check out the whole series of tweets below for a good laugh.

Folic acid supplements early in pregnancy may reduce child's risk of autism by 40 percent

Folic acid supplements early in pregnancy may reduce child's risk of autism by 40 percent

Wednesday, February 13, 2013

Prenatal folic acid supplements appear to reduce the risk for autistic spectrum disorders, according to a study published today (February 13) in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that about 1 in 88 children in the U.S. have been identified with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). ASDs are amongst the most heritable of mental disorders, but little is known about how the disorder develops. Consequently, methods for diagnosis, prevention, and treatment are limited.

Folic acid (Vitamin B9) is required for DNA synthesis and repair in the human body, and its naturally occurring form?folate?is found in leafy vegetables, peas, lentils, beans, eggs, yeast, and liver. Taking folic acid supplements during early pregnancy is known to protect against spina bifida and other neural tube defects in children. In the United States, Canada, and Chile, folic acid is added to flour, so as to automatically provide these supplements to consumers. Norway does not enrich its flour, and since 1998, the Norwegian Directorate of Health has recommended that all women planning to become pregnant take a daily supplement of folic acid from one month before the start of pregnancy through the first trimester.

Despite this policy, studies from North America and Europe have shown that many pregnant women have a lower dietary intake of folate than what is necessary to prevent neural tube defects.

The report in JAMA emerged from the Norwegian Mother and Child Cohort Study (MoBa) and its sub-study of autism, the Autism Birth Cohort (ABC) Study. This international collaboration (see list of members below) comprises the largest prospective birth cohort devoted to the investigation of gene-environment interactions and biomarker discovery for neuropsychiatric disorders.

A total of 85,176 MoBa babies?born from 2002-2008?and their parents participated in the study. Prenatal dietary habits were recorded, and families were regularly surveyed for 3-10 years to measure the development of autism spectrum disorders. A total of 270 cases of autism spectrum disorders were identified in the study population (114 autistic disorder; 56 Asperger syndrome; 100 atypical or unspecified autism; i.e., pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified, PDD-NOS).

Mothers who took folic acid supplements in early pregnancy had a 40% reduced risk of having children with autistic disorder compared with mothers who did not take folic acid. The reduction in risk was observed in those who took folic acid during the time interval from 4 weeks before to 8 weeks after the start of pregnancy. Autistic disorder is the most severe form of autism spectrum disorders in children. No reduction in risk was observed for PDD-NOS. For Asperger syndrome, the number of children was too low to obtain sufficient statistical power in the analyses.

The use of folic acid in early pregnancy increased substantially from 2002 to 2008 among women who participated in MoBa. In 2002, 43% of mothers took folic acid supplements; by 2008, 85% of mothers did. However, many women began taking folic acid later than recommended, and only half started before the beginning of pregnancy.

The timing of a mother's intake of folate appears to be a critical factor. Her child's risk of autism was reduced only when the supplements were taken between 4 weeks before to 8 weeks after the start of pregnancy.

"We examined the rate of autism spectrum disorders in children born to mothers who did or did not take folic acid during pregnancy. There was a dramatic reduction in the risk of autistic disorder in children born to mothers who took folic acid supplements," says P?l Sur?n, first author and epidemiologist at the Norwegian Institute of Public Health (NIPH).

The researchers also analyzed whether the risk of autistic disorder was influenced by the use of other dietary supplements. They did not find any association between the mother's use of fish oil supplements (cod liver oil and omega-3 fatty acids) in early pregnancy and the risk of autistic disorder, and no association for the mother's use of other vitamins and minerals.

In recent years, researchers have started to investigate whether folic acid has other beneficial effects on the development of the fetus' brain and spinal cord. A study of language development from MoBa, published in 2011, showed that children whose mothers took folic acid supplements in early pregnancy had only half the risk of severe language delay at age three years compared with other children. A separate 2011 study from the University of California, Davis, demonstrated a lower risk of autism spectrum disorders in children of mothers who had used prenatal vitamin supplements during pregnancy. Prenatal vitamin supplements contain folic acid in combination with other vitamins and minerals.

Joint senior author Ezra Susser, professor of Epidemiology at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health and professor of Psychiatry at the College of Physicians and Surgeons, stated, "Our findings extend earlier work on the significance of folate in brain development and raise the possibility of an important and inexpensive public health intervention for reducing the burden of autism spectrum disorders."

"This elegant work illustrates the power of the ABC cohort for not only chipping away at the riddle of what causes autism, but for developing new methods for early recognition, prevention and treatment," says W. Ian Lipkin, John Snow Professor of Epidemiology at the Mailman School of Public Health and principal investigator of the ABC cohort.

The Land of the Rising Stocks: Buy Japan Now ... - Yahoo! Finance

A recent headline in The Japan Times read "Japan Inc. Unsure If Yen's Recent Downtrend Will Last," which characterizes the nervousness about the country's chosen path to prosperity. While there is no disputing the benefits derived by a trading nation such as Japan, when it weakens its currency, there is also little argument that this trend runs counter to what is generally indicative of a strong economy.

It triggers the age-old debate over how much of a good thing is too much, and as the aforementioned article discusses, some manufacturers are already showing signs that they are reluctant to count on it happening. Investors, however are a different breed, and simply see a country with a new government and a central bank willing to go down that path and they pounce.

The Nikkei 225 (^N225) is on a roll, as the Yen (JPY=) has plunged. For Tom Lydon, editor of ETFtrends.com, predicting the end of this trend impossible, so he says to ride it until it breaks.

"If it [Nikkei 225] goes below its 200-day moving average, use that as an exit strategy" Lydon says in the attached video, where he names the Wisdom Tree Japan Hedged Equity (DXJ) ETF as his favorite way top play the country.

"The idea is, with the Nikkei up 20%, the DXJ is also hedged against the yen falling, which is down 14% during that same time, so you're short the yen as well," he explains, adding that he is also encouraged by the fact that Japan is also willing to raise taxes, something he takes as a sign of confidence.

"They're making big, big bets that they're going to have a global economic turnaround," he says.

While some have argued that the Nikkei rally might be getting old at this point, Lydon is quick to remind us that even with the rebound, the Japanese market is still 70% below its all-time high.

Jeremiah McKay Dead: San Bernardino County Sheriff's Deputy Allegedly Killed By Chris Dorner

LOS ANGELES ? A San Bernardino County sheriff's deputy killed in a shootout with a man believed to be fugitive former LAPD officer Chris Dorner had gone into the search happy to help his community but wary of the dangers.

San Bernardino County Sheriff John McMahon identified the deputy Wednesday as Jeremiah MacKay, a man who grew up in the area and followed his father into public service.

MacKay suffered multiple gunshot wounds Tuesday and was transported to Loma Linda Hospital where he died of his injuries. He was 35.

MacKay was a detective who had been with the department for 15 years.

"My condolences go out to the MacKay family," said San Bernardino County Sheriff John McMahon. "This is truly another sad day for law enforcement. Our department is grieving from this event. It's just a terrible deal for all of us."

Another deputy, Alex Collins, was also hit by gunfire and remained hospitalized Wednesday after undergoing multiple surgeries. He was expected to make a full recovery, McMahon said.

MacKay's family is well known in the mountain community, according to locals. His father was a captain in the San Bernardino County Fire Department, and MacKay attended Rim of the World High School.

MacKay spoke to The Associated Press on Saturday while he was helping patrol the Big Bear Lake area for Dorner.

MacKay and his partner had been on duty since 5 a.m. and they were in good spirits. He stood by the door of his car, dressed in full tactical gear with a helmet and bulletproof vest. He took his Mini-14 rifle out and practiced sighting down its barrel, tucking it in against his shoulder and aiming playfully at a snowdrift.

When a reporter walked up behind him, he turned around with a big smile. MacKay said he was happy to be helping the community and that "everyone's been really nice."

It was MacKay's third day helping with the search for Dorner.

As soon as he had heard news about Dorner's pickup truck in the area Thursday morning, MacKay headed out with his partner to help beef up patrol in Angelus Oaks ? near the cabin where Dorner made his last stand. MacKay worked into the night and was back the next day at 7 a.m. to help again.

"It's probably one of the biggest tactical and logistics operations we've ever dealt with," MacKay said.

He said it was reminiscent of operations during the 2003 Old Fire, when a blaze in the San Bernardino mountains burned 91,000 acres and torched 1,000 buildings over nine days. But this was entirely different for one major reason.

"This one, you just never know if the guy's going to pop out or where he's going to pop out," MacKay said. "We're hoping this comes to a close without any more casualties. The best thing would be for him to give up."

MacKay said because Dorner was targeting law enforcement, officers were taking extra precautions by staying in pairs and in larger groups.

"Everyone is here for the safety of everyone," MacKay said, "for the safety of each other, for the safety of you."

MacKay leaves behind a wife, a 7-year-old daughter and a 4-month-old son.

Pope makes 1st public appearance since bombshell

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? Pope Benedict XVI is making his first public appearance since his bombshell announcement of his resignation, presiding over his weekly general audience and Ash Wednesday services.

Thousands of people are expected to fill the Vatican audience hall on Wednesday morning for the audience, which will be his second to last public audience before stepping down Feb. 28.

Later in the day, the 85-year-old Benedict will celebrate Ash Wednesday, the official start of the Catholic Church's solemn Lenten season. The service is usually held in a church on Rome's Aventine hill, but was moved at the last minute to St. Peter's Basilica. The Vatican said the shift was made to accommodate the crowds, though it will also spare the pope the usual procession to the church.

Samsung details Innovation Centers in San Francisco and New York, focusing hard on software + hardware marriage

Samsung

David Eun, presently serving as EVP at Samsung's Open Innovation Center after stints at AOL, Google, Time Warner and NBC Entertainment, just took the stage here in Dana Point, California during the opening night of D:Dive Into Media 2013. Given the media / content focus of the event, the conversation between Eun and host Kara Swisher revolved almost entirely on Samsung's role in the world of content, production, connectedness and distribution. Starting things off with a bang, he affirmed that Samsung is opening two new Innovation Centers that'll act as idea accelerators. In a way, this is Samsung getting into the funding game, which certainly adds a new twist to an industry that has largely been dominated by angels that aren't necessarily a part of a major corporation.

Initially, one will be opening up in the Bay Area, while the other gets planted at an undisclosed location in New York City. Eun noted that in the past, Samsung was "focused on manufacturing hardware," but it realized some time ago that you "have to get both hardware and software right." He stated that the company as a whole has been "investing quite significantly over the past few years on software," and turning to how it impacts content, he explained an internal company process that aims to gather insight about consumers. Not necessarily in the creepy, privacy-invading kind of insight, but in the way of discovering what consumers want, but don't yet have in the marketplace.

Dogs 'understand minds of humans'

Dogs are more capable of understanding situations from a human's point of view than has previously been recognised, according to researchers.

They found dogs were four times more likely to steal food they had been forbidden, when lights were turned off so humans in the room could not see.

This suggested the dogs were able to alter their behaviour when they knew their owners' perspective had changed.

The study, published in Animal Cognition, conducted tests on 84 dogs.

The experiments had been trying to find whether dogs could adapt their behaviour in response to the changed circumstances of their human owners.

It wanted to see if dogs had a "flexible understanding" that could show they understood the viewpoint of a human.

Dog's understanding

It found that when the lights were turned off, dogs in a room with their human owners were much more likely to disobey and steal forbidden food.

The study says it is "unlikely that the dogs simply forgot that the human was in the room" when there was no light. Instead it seems as though the dogs were able to differentiate between when the human was unable or able to see them.

The experiments had been designed with enough variations to avoid false associations - such as dogs beginning to associate sudden darkness with someone giving them food, researchers said.

Dr Juliane Kaminski, from the University of Portsmouth's psychology department, said the study was "incredible because it implies dogs understand the human can't see them, meaning they might understand the human perspective".

This could also be important in understanding the capacities of dogs that have to interact closely with humans, such as guide dogs for the blind and sniffer dogs.

Previous studies have suggested that although humans might think that they can recognise different expressions on their dogs' faces, this is often inaccurate and a projection of human emotions.

"Humans constantly attribute certain qualities and emotions to other living things. We know that our own dog is clever or sensitive, but that's us thinking, not them," said Dr Kaminski.

"These results suggest humans might be right, where dogs are concerned, but we still can't be completely sure if the results mean dogs have a truly flexible understanding of the mind and others' minds. It has always been assumed only humans had this ability."
