Live Spotify Announcement - Business Insider

We're live from Spotify's big global press conference in New York City.

The show is set to begin at 12:00 p.m. EST.

We'll have constant updates as they come, as well as pictures straight from the floor.

Will Spotify announce a new app or API, or will we finally get a Spotify music store?

Apps will start on the desktop, and if they're successful, they'll come to mobile.

"The reason we're doing this is because we know that users want more information about the music they're listening to."

Apps will be free to use for paid and non-paid Spotify users.

As of now, the apps won't exist outside of the Spotify app

It will be open for developers, but Spotify will approve each app individually.

"We are bringing music to where it should've been."

Integrated apps inside Spotify.?

The true core is making all the music available instantly.

Music accounts for 10% of music online.

HTML 5 apps and an easy to use JavaScript API.

Over 500M playlists have been created. It's like mixtapes. Extensions of each user's identity.

"Sweden is famous for Pirate Bay and Kazaa. Piracy was rampant. But then we came along."

spotify vs piracy

"500 million people listening online, and very few of them do so legally. You need a better product than piracy. Our mission is to give people access to all the music they want, all the time."

"Spotify if making the future of music a reality today."

...and nothing is happening yet. Check back in a few minutes. We're in the dugout. Daniel Ek is a foot away.

We just heard that a good amount of Spotify's Swedish HQ is here for the announcement. The New York Spotify office was pretty crowded this morning. Over 100 people showed up to work.

Thanks for joining us! We're due to get started in about five minutes. We're pulling for a Spotify music store, but who knows what the green Swedish company has up its sleeve.
