An Internet for the people: Reducing cronyism in broadband | AEIdeas

In a new paper in the AEI Economic Studies series, visiting fellow Jeffrey Eisenach argues that broadband internet providers are operating under a regulatory policy that does little to help consumers and much to stifle innovation:

Broadband is treated differently from other IT industries when it comes to competition policy: Competition in the rest of the IT sector is subject to scrutiny under the antitrust laws, while broadband is regulated by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC)?. In short, while other elements of the ?Internet ecosystem? ? i.e., applications, content and devices ? receive ex post treatment under the antitrust laws, broadband ISPs are subject to ex ante regulation.

To solve this, Eisenach argues for replacing onerous regulation with anti-trust enforcement designed to make the broadband market more dynamic and competitive.

Unfortunately, too frequently regulation passed in the name of helping consumers results in regulatory capture and does more to benefit incumbent market participants than anything else. This kind of rent seeking and cronyism is pervasive in industries with a few established firms who use regulation as a means of keeping out competitors.

There?s no silver bullet to fix this problem, but Jeff?s suggestion of replacing regulations that prevent the broadband industry from offering faster speeds at lower prices to more customers with one that seeks merely to ensure that monopolies don?t develop strikes me as imminently sensible.

Competitive broadband markets, as with most markets, are good for American consumers and good for innovation. Anything we can do to sweep aside regulations that benefit cronies is a step in the right direction.

Victim who got Sandusky case going recalls ordeal

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) ? For nearly a year, the young man whose claims of abuse triggered the molestation investigation into Jerry Sandusky was known publicly as "Victim 1."

On Friday, Aaron Fisher put aside anonymity to speak by name about his ordeal, saying he had contemplated suicide because authorities took so long to prosecute the former Penn State assistant football coach.

"Victim means people feel sympathy for you, I don't want that," Fisher said in an interview with on ABC's "20/20." ''I would rather be somebody that did something good."

Fisher first reported the abuse in 2008, but he said the Pennsylvania attorney general's office told him it needed more victims before Sandusky would be charged. Sandusky was not arrested until last November.

The delay, Fisher said, made him increasingly desperate.

"I thought maybe it would be easier to take myself out of the equation," he told ABC. "Let somebody else deal with it."

Fisher, now 18, testified as Victim 1 at Sandusky's trial. He, his mother and his psychologist have co-written a forthcoming book about his ordeal. Sandusky was convicted in June of abusing Fisher and nine other boys, and was sentenced to 30 to 60 years in prison.

Fisher told jurors that Sandusky approached him through a summer camp for youth sponsored by The Second Mile, a charity for at-risk youth the former coach had founded.

Physical contact began with a hand on his leg in the car, Fisher said, and he began spending nights at the Sandusky home in State College, about 30 miles from his own home in Lock Haven, when he was 11 years old. Kissing and back rubbing during those overnight visits progressed to oral sex. He said he tried to distance himself from Sandusky, to no avail.

Fisher was 15 when he and his mother eventually reported the abuse to the school principal, who responded that "Jerry has a heart of gold and that he wouldn't do those type of things," Fisher told ABC, repeating his trial testimony.

"They tell me to go home and think about it," his mother, Dawn Daniels, told ABC.

School officials reported Sandusky to Clinton County Children and Youth Services, which began an investigation and brought in state police.

The Associated Press typically does not name sexual abuse victims, unless they identify themselves publicly, as Fisher has done.

Sandusky defense lawyer Joe Amendola, at a legal seminar in Wilmington, Del., said Fisher and other victims were motivated by money, a claim he has repeatedly made.

"These accusers could have financial motives, and they could have been abused," Amendola said. "They're not mutually exclusive."

On Thursday, Amendola filed a 31-page document in the case that is the first step in Sandusky's effort to overturn his conviction, contending there wasn't enough evidence against him and the trial wasn't fair. The post-sentencing motions attacked rulings by the judge, the closing argument by the prosecution and the speed by which he went from arrest to trial.

Sandusky, 68, wants the charges tossed out "and/or" a new trial, saying the statute of limitations had run out for many of the 45 counts for which he was convicted in June. Currently in a county jail near State College, he is awaiting transfer to the state prison system to begin serving a 30- to 60-year sentence.

Fisher and seven other young men testified against him in June, describing a range of abuse they said included fondling and oral and anal sex when they were boys.

The abuse scandal rocked Penn State, bringing down longtime coach Joe Paterno and the university's president and leading the NCAA, college sports' governing body, to levy unprecedented sanctions against the university's football program.

David Richardson sees ICC fighting a war on corruption ? Cricket News Update

The International Cricket Council?s (ICC) chief executive, David Richardson, believes that the world cricketing body is at war with corruption.

"It is a war we are fighting. Our anti-corruption unit have their work cut out to make sure players are kept away from temptation.? Richardson said in London.

"It's everybody now, unfortunately. Everybody is susceptible -- curators, groundsmen -- our corruption unit is very aware of what it needs to do,? he added.

Last week, six South Asian umpires were suspended for a period of an ongoing inquiry after a sting operation by an Indian television; India TV accused the umpires of showing willingness to give favourable decisions after receiving payments.

ICC immediately requested the channel to share evidence in order to build a case against the umpires.

This news has shocked the cricketing world where after players now even the officials are believed to be involved in match-fixing.

However, so far the accused umpires have maintained their innocence, insisting that they have been wrongly accused by the said channel.

Nadir Shah, the Bangladesh umpire among the umpires in a recent interview while pleading not-guilty said, ?I went there to complete a deal to umpire in the Sri Lanka Premier League. I was taken from the airport to a hotel, where I was introduced to a guy. There were a few others in the room. I felt threatened by what they were saying and as a result I went along with what they were asking me to do."

Willing to help the BCB in the investigation he said that his board has done so much for him, and he has decided to tell the officials his side of the story.

Nonetheless, corruption is not new in cricket where players from various countries including Australia, Pakistan and India have had a tainted history.

In 2010 three Pakistan players Mohammad Amir, Mohammad Asif and Salman Butt were banned from international cricket after they were found guilty of spot-fixing. Later, in November 2011 the three were convicted of conspiracy charges relating to spot-fixing.

Weight lifting is not just for building muscles. You can build muscles by lifting weights, but you can also reap many other health benefits, and you do not have to build muscles, just keep them strong and healthy.

Lifting weights is an exercise, like many others that work your body, and it can help you ward off many health problems which might come in later years, by keeping your body well toned.

Using your muscles keeps them strong, and at the same time, keeps your entire body healthy. You can build bone mass by lifting weights, which may ward off osteoporosis in later years.

Another benefit is weight loss. When you do any kind of exercise you will lose body fat and at the same time, tighten and tone your muscles. By weight lifting exercises and by controlling the amount of calories that you put into your body, you can lose extra weight. Also, as you exercise you will notice that you do not get as hungry.

You will not get big muscles simply because you lift weights. If you add the right kinds of foods while you are lifting weights, you can grow bigger muscles. This is not the only reason for lifting weights, however.

As you begin to lift weights more, you will increase your metabolism. This means that you can eat more food and still retain your weight, if you do not need to lose pounds. Stress levels have been shown to be reduced by exercising, as well, which helps to keep your mental health sound.

Regular weight training has also shown to reduce the incidence of resistance to insulin, reduces high blood pressure, and slows the incidence of diabetes, heart disease, and even some kinds of cancer. The heart is a muscle, and it needs to be exercised as well as the other muscles of the body.

Bones, muscles, and tendons are the framework that holds our body together, and each of these body parts can be strengthened by weight training. Weight lifting is a very good overall body exercise, to keep your body in tip top shape. Exercising, by lifting weights, can help your body stay young, and keep you in better health for a longer period of time.

There are many people who have lifted weights and exercised their entire life, and when they reached old age, were still very active. It has been proven that the human body definitely needs exercise to keep it healthy and working right. If everyone would eat correctly, make fruits and vegetables the main part of their meal, eat smaller amounts of meat, and lift weights for exercise, we would have healthier bodies, and there would be less incidences of some of the major diseases in our society today. It takes a mind set on being healthy, and a great amount of self-control, to stay with a strict exercise or diet program for good health, but we must challenge ourselves to do so, if we truly want to be healthy.
