SAN ANTONIO (AP) ? Look who's unstoppable now.

Forget that incredible San Antonio streak of 20 straight wins. That's ancient history, and the way the Oklahoma City Thunder have taken complete command of the Western Conference finals, the Spurs might soon be finished themselves.

Kevin Durant scored 27 points and the Thunder are on the brink of the NBA Finals, beating the Spurs 108-103 in Game 5 on Monday night and going from an 0-2 hole to moving within a victory of a series knockout. Their first chance will be Wednesday night at home, where they're unbeaten in the playoffs.

"We never thought we're supposed to wait our turn," Durant said. "Coach always emphasizes that with every opportunity that you step on the floor. It's a great opportunity to get better. To get to our dream."

Russell Westbrook added 23 and the Thunder took a 3-2 lead in a wildly entertaining Western Conference finals. Looking invincible while carrying a 20-game winning streak a week ago ? the fourth-longest in NBA history ? the Spurs have lost three straight and are on the verge of a stunning collapse.

Manu Ginobili scored 34 in a smashing return to the starting lineup, and the switch showed just how much Spurs coach Gregg Popovich knew his team might be in trouble. The only way the Spurs would have considered the move a success is had they won, and that chance went clanging off the back of the rim with 4.9 seconds left when Ginobili missed an off-balance 3.

Ginobili then walked to the scorer's table, made a fist and hammered it down.

"It wasn't a great shot, but it wasn't a bad one," Ginobili said. "It just didn't go in."

It was the Spurs first loss at home since April 11.

Popovich said he removed Danny Green from the starting lineup and plugged in Ginobili ? who had started only seven previous times this season ? to give the Spurs "an energy boost." But that didn't solve a third straight uneven game for the Spurs, particularly another languid second quarter that put them in a 14-point hole.

"If we don't get that straight," Popovich said, "it'll be over on Wednesday."

Oklahoma City, meanwhile, is bringing home just what they needed: the must-win on the road if they're going to pull this series out.

"That was a total team effort," Thunder coach Scott Brooks said. "Everybody did their job. I thought we played as hard as we can play."

Oklahoma City pulled it off behind their stars. James Harden scored 20, joining Durant and Westbrook as the only Thunder players in double figures.

Harden hit the biggest shot, draining a 3-pointer with 28.8 seconds left that pushed Oklahoma City's lead to five. He admitted afterward that the ball was supposed to go to Durant but had no choice but to let go with the shot clock winding down and Spurs rookie Kawhi Leonard in his face.

"The shot clock was running down and I had to make a play," Harden said. "Leonard was playing great defense on me. I just shot it with confidence. West Conference finals ? that's a big shot."

Tony Parker had 20 points and Tim Duncan had 18 points and 12 rebounds for the Spurs.

After remaining unbeaten for 50 days before arriving in Oklahoma City, San Antonio has lost three games in five days. They now must win two straight to avoid seeing their last best chance to win in a title in the Duncan era end.

"Championship teams win on the road," Popovich said. "Oklahoma City just did that."

It's the first time the Spurs have lost three in a row all season.

Durant scored 22 of his points in the second half. He dedicated the win to his uncle, who Durant said was in the hospital.

Westbrook also had 12 assists.

Not wanting the series to slip away, Popovich moved Ginobili to the starting lineup in place of Green, who came in shooting a combined 8 of 28 in this series.

Green's days as a starter began looking numbered after Game 3. He couldn't save his job before leaving Oklahoma City ? Green shot 4 of 12 in both losses combined ? and Popovich couldn't wait any longer with the series tied and the season in the balance.

Out with the undrafted swingman who barely made training camp, and in with the former All-Star. Pulling this big an adjustment this deep in the season likely didn't come easy for the NBA coach of the year, and the gambit drew mixed results.

It looked like a no-brainer with Ginobili leading all scorers at halftime with 14, but new rotations for the Spurs made for rocky possessions. None more so than in the second quarter, when the Spurs shot 38 percent.

Ginobili finished 11 of 21 and made half of his 10 3-point attempts. But with the game and arguably San Antonio's season on the line, his last one didn't connect.

"It's either win or go home," Ginobili said. "It's our job. Nobody is going to feel sorry about ourselves."

Notes: Taking a page from the Thunder, the Spurs held a T-shirt whiteout at the AT&T Center, a move the team has rarely made before. ...Durant's the clear last-shot taker for the Thunder. Popovich said it's as obvious as Dirk Nowitzki having the ball in his hands at the end for Dallas. But who do the Spurs go to with the game on the line? "It's a secret," Popovich said before the game.

Exercise benefits black girls less than whites, study shows

In a dispiriting finding for African American girls and women, a new study finds that while engaging in high levels of physical activity is a good bet for preventing obesity in white adolescent girls, it does not give their black peers the same benefit.

The study, published in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, found that among black adolescent girls who moved the most at age 12, obesity at age 14 was nearly as likely as it was for those whose activity rates were far lower.

For white girls, by contrast, regular exercise at 12 appeared a nearly sure way to head off obesity at 14. That finding held, even when the calorie intakes of an African American youngster and her white counterpart were the same.

The authors, a pair of British researchers using data from a government health study that followed American adolescents for several years, said their findings pointed to a significant metabolic disadvantage for African American girls hoping to maintain a healthy weight. They concluded that "obesity-prevention interventions may need to be adapted to account for the finding that black girls are less sensitive to the effects of physical activity" than their white sisters.

In the national effort to stem a crisis of obesity in the United States, the state of African American women stands out as a particular challenge. At 39.4%, their rate of obesity is the highest of any single ethnic or gender group measured. Four in five black women are overweight or obese when measured by the most widely accepted gauge of fatness, the body mass index, or BMI.

The run-up in weight probably begins in adolescence, experts say, which is why many efforts to address the epidemic of obesity and its related diseases in African American women are heavily focused on girls. First LadyMichelle Obama's"Let's Move" campaign, for example, has focused intensively on getting African Americans girls and adolescents to become more active.

The new finding "makes our life more challenging," said Ginny Ehrlich, chief executive of the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, which works in more than 14,000 U.S. schools to encourage exercise and healthier eating. It underscores the need to stress the fundamental skill of balancing energy intake and output.

"It's not just physical activity," Ehrlich said. "That's particularly important for African American girls."

The study, which draws from a database of 1,148 adolescents, is the first to explore differences between white and black girls' physical activity rates and their effect on weight. (Just under half ? 538 ? identified themselves as African American.) But it falls in line with research that finds black women oxidize fat more slowly in response to exercise, and that their resting metabolic rates are lower than those of white women.

Such racial differences "may predispose black girls to retaining fat accumulated during puberty," wrote the authors, James White of Cardiff University and Russell Jago of the University of Bristol. "Our results suggest that prompting adolescent girls to be active may be important to preventing obesity but that using different approaches (e.g. emphasizing reductions in energy intake) may be necessary to prevent obesity in black girls."

The study compared white and black girls' physical activity and food intake as measured in three-day stretches where they wore a pedometer and kept track of what they ate. They also reported participation in physical activities through the year. Based on activity, each group was divided into upper and lower halves.

By BMI and two other obesity measures (a measure of body fat adopted by the International Obesity Task Force and a gauge of skin-fold thickness), the 12-year-old black girls in the top half of the physical activity continuum were only 15% less likely to be obese by age 14 than ones in the lower half.

For white girls, those in the upper half were 85% less likely to become obese over the next two years than were those in the bottom half.

For 28-year-old Toni Carey of Norfolk, Va., co-founder of the national running group Black Girls Run!, that harsh reality compounds an already challenging situation for African American girls. When Carey took up running to improve her health, she said her mother's "first reaction was, 'That's something that black people don't do.' She said, 'Your uterus is going to fall out' and all sorts of things."

In African American households headed by a single-parent struggling to feed kids on a limited income, she said, "if you have to eat off the dollar menu, that's what you do." In others, she added, family cooking traditions that emphasize less healthful foods and food preparation can be difficult to change.

Beyond that, "if you aren't seeing your peers out there running and exercising, or you hear them say, 'I don't want to mess up my hair,' it's more than likely you're not going to engage in that physical activity."

Ehrlich, of the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, said that she would be wary of sharing the study's results with young black women, for whom body size is "already a really sensitive subject."

"It creates yet another barrier to what might already feel like a struggle," she said. "When we talk with young people, we talk about healthy living ? eating better and moving more. We're trying to stay away from messaging around obesity."

Linda Bacon, an associate nutritionist with UC Davis and a critic of the nation's focus on reducing obesity, said activists were right to focus on healthy lifestyles and not on BMI.

"We should just be encouraging activity for the sake of activity and good health," said Bacon, author of "Health at Every Size." "If we encourage it as a weight management technique, when it doesn't work for that, people won't see the value in it."

Ohio crash kills 3 teens, one on graduation day

CINCINNATI (AP) ? A car carrying five teenagers went airborne as it sped over railroad tracks in northeast Ohio early Sunday and crashed, killing the 18-year-old driver hours before his high school graduation and two of his passengers, the Ohio State Highway Patrol said.

The other two passengers, one of them also an impending graduate, were hospitalized.

Less than 13 hours after the crash, Brunswick High School students left empty seats covered with flowers at their graduation ceremony to remember driver Jeffrey Chaya and Kevin Fox, who was critically injured.

"It was very sad," Superintendent Michael Mayell said after the commencement ceremony at the University of Akron. "There were a lot of tears."

The 2001 Chevrolet Cavalier was traveling at a high speed just after midnight when Chaya lost control in Columbia Township, troopers at the Elyria post said. The car went airborne and off the right side of the roadway, then swerved across the left side of the road, hit a ditch and tree, then flipped over, according to the troopers' report.

Chaya, a senior football player, and two passengers, 17-year-old Blake Bartchak and 16-year-old Lexi Poerner, were killed, the patrol said.

Fox, a back-seat passenger, was thrown from the car into a ditch, troopers said. He was flown to Cleveland Metro Health Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition. Fox, 18, also was scheduled to graduate Sunday.

The fifth person in the car, identified by troopers as 17-year-old Julia Romito, was taken to Southwest General Hospital, which wouldn't release information on her.

Fox and Chaya were called during the commencement, which included a moment of silence and comments about the tragic accident, Mayell said. More than 600 students graduated Sunday.

Grief counselors were available to meet with students at the high school later in the day, and a memorial service was being held Sunday evening at a church.

"We want to allow the families to grieve in peace, and do whatever we can to get through this very tragic situation," Mayell said.

Troopers were still investigating the crash Sunday. They said the only confirmed factor was unsafe speed, although they were still calculating the car's estimated speed.

Mayell has known Poerner's family for years, and said the students who were killed were well known at school, taking part in school activities and volunteering.

"They were very popular students, very well-liked," Mayell said.

"We've always been a very tight-knit community," he said. "It's one of those things that happens that I just don't get."

Chaya, a wide receiver on the Brunswick High football team, had posted Saturday on his Twitter account: "Weird to think graduation is tomorrow time does fly big time."

On Saturday, graduating seniors at another northeast Ohio high school wore special red and black ribbons as a sign of unity and remembrance in the aftermath of the Feb. 27 Chardon school shootings that killed three students and wounded two others.

Pew survey: Partisan polarization in US hits 25-year high

Partisan divisions have become wider since 1987, with most of the shift occurring under the Bush and Obama presidencies, a Pew survey finds. This does not bode well for gridlock in Congress.

Americans have become more politically polarized than at any time in the past 25 years, according to a major survey released Monday by the Pew Research Center.

Pew measured partisan differences on 48 areas that it has tracked since 1987, and the average partisan gap has nearly doubled, from 10 percent to 18 percent. Partisan divisions have grown most noticeably over the role of the social safety net, environmental protection, immigration, and the federal government?s scope and performance, with Democrats moving to the left and Republicans moving to the right.

Nearly all the increases occurred during the presidencies of George W. Bush and Barack Obama.

?Republicans are most distinguished by their increasingly minimalist views about the role of government and lack of support for environmentalism,? the study?s authors write. ?Democrats have become more socially liberal and secular. Republicans and Democrats are most similar in their level of political engagement.?

In practical terms, the study does not bode well for Congress?s ability to address America?s problems.

The Pew authors note that views on the importance of environmental protection have ?arguably been the most pointed area of polarization.? Twenty years ago, when questions about the environment were first asked, there was almost no partisan difference in views. And as recently as 2003, Republicans and Democrats came in on average 13 points apart on environmental issues. Now the gap is 39 points.

Also noteworthy is the growth of political independents. Fewer Americans are affiliating with either of the major parties than at any time in the past 25 years, Pew found. And when Gallup poll data going back to 1939 are factored in, Pew concludes that there are now more political independents than at any point in the past 75 years.

Currently, 38 percent of Americans self-identify as independents, while 32 percent are Democrats and 24 percent are Republicans. But most independents lean toward one of the major parties, and when party definitions are expanded to include these ?leaning independents,? the values gap still nearly doubles between 1987 and 2012.

When viewed through the lens of the 2012 presidential election, the survey found that the largest divides between supporters of President Obama and those who back presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney center on the role and scope of government in the economy.

?Swing voters, who make up about a quarter of all registered voters, are cross-pressured,? the authors write. ?Their attitudes on the social safety net and immigration are somewhat closer to those of Romney supporters, while they tilt closer to Obama supporters in opinions about labor unions and some social issues.?

Republicans and Democrats are furthest apart in their views on the social safety net. In three main areas, the partisan gap in opinion is at least 35 points: the government?s responsibility to care for the poor; whether the government should help more needy people if it means adding to the debt; and whether the government should guarantee all citizens enough to eat and a place to sleep.

On all three measures, the percentage of Republicans agreeing that there is a government responsibility to help the poor has fallen in recent years to 25-year lows, according to Pew.

The study is based on an April survey of 3,000 American adults, with a margin of error of plus or minus 2.1 percentage points.
